Musings about Parenting Through Culinary Creations

Watermelon Agua Fresca

Growing up in California I was raised drinking agua frescas. My tata (grandfather) would always take my sister and I to buy one when we were out at the market running errands for my nana. There is something to this day that is so familiar and comforting about the taste of the cool sweet fruit water. Sometimes I feel like I am instantly transported back in time for a moment to those markets with my tata and sister. Even now sharing this little bit of a story with you all makes me smile and long for a large glass of watermelon agua and piece of pan dulce.  Now that I am living in Columbus which is a bit far from my native California, it is hard to find a good legit agua fresca vendor. However, after a bit of research and hunting around I found a cool family owned place, but it isn’t close to our house. So, I decided to not be lazy and make my own. It is actually not very difficult at all (depending on the fruit). When my little family and I went back home to visit Praveena and her family I made a batch to go with our tandoori chicken tacos, and they paired quiet well if I do say so myself. Have fun with this recipe and don’t be afraid to get inventive. Happy cooking friends!

Instructions
  1. In a blender or food processor, puree the watermelon. Strain the juice through a sieve into a large pitcher. Add the lime juice, agave, and mix well. I find that a long handled wooden spoon works best. Refrigerate for at least an hour.
  2. When the agua fresca has chilled remove it from the refrigerator and give it another good mix. Serve over ice and garnished with a lime.
  3. If you are adding tequila add as little or as much depending on your preference to each individual drink. Unless you are making the entire batch alcoholic. If that is the case add it in after it is done chilling, and again it is to taste/personal preference.
